Woman attends bizarre wedding where the seating chart was sorted alphabetically: 'All the Annes and Bobs at one table... all the Joes and Katies at another'

Attending a wedding as a third-tier guest is already a stressful experience. Imagine sitting next to all these random strangers with the same name as you. 

The concept feels almost Lynchian, but yes, it did actually happen. This author shared her account of the time she attended a friend's reception, where she was surprised to learn that she wasn't going to be seated with her significant other or with the few people she already knew prior to the wedding.

This, of course, can occasionally happen. There are only so many seats per table, and sometimes, sacrifices need to be made and you end up having to be seated among strangers. However, this didn't just happen to the author at this reception; this happened to everybody.

That's because the bride and groom decided to do something different with their seating arrangement. They opted to put zero thought into the groupings, instead choosing to simply organize everything alphabetically. Yes, that meant everyone named Michael sat together, as did everyone named Sue, Susan, and Suzanne. Nobody was with their friends or family, just the random people whose names were similar if not the same.

  • Sure, every couple needs to make their own decisions about how they wish to celebrate their wedding day, and those decisions should be respected… in theory. If you're just actively inconveniencing your guests by making an extremely awkward evening, people aren't going to be wishing you a healthy marriage.
